GUIDE
Sun & Moon Signs
The Sun-sign columns that appear in newspapers and magazines are what most people think of when they think of astrology. These columns, although sometimes

entertaining, are hopelessly vague and general since they only deal with the most elemental of all the symbols in a horoscope: the Sun in one of the twelve signs. Millions of people, after all, of all different ages and backgrounds, share the same Sun sign. There is a simple way, however, to take astrology beyond these Sun-sign generalities and begin to understand your own horoscope—and you don’t even need a printout of your horoscope to start learning the basics of your natal chart.
The Sun-Moon blend is the basic building block of any horoscope. It’s easy to discover your Sun-Moon blend: most people already know their Sun sign, and the Moon sign can be found with a quick glance at an Ephemeris (available at bookstores, libraries, and online) for the day you were born. There are 144 possible combinations, and although each blend still applies to large numbers of people, knowing your own Sun-Moon blend will take you a giant step beyond whatever you have learned from just your Sun sign alone.
The only way we can look at the light of the Sun is through the reflection of the Moon: looking directly at the Sun is blinding. The Moon takes the basic light energy of the Sun and shapes it into a form we can observe. In psychological terms, the Sun sign represents the basic life energy that flows through our being, and the Moon sign shows us the fundamental emotional need that shapes the energy we are given at birth. Planets don’t make things happen, but needs do, and the Moon sign tells us about the reigning need of our personality. Together, the Sun and the Moon reveal the highest potential in each of us.
